Obama New Yorker Cover : The Politics of Fear

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Barack Obama’s campaign is blasting a New Yorker magazine cover, calling it “tasteless and offensive.”

The cover depicts “President Obama” wearing a Muslim-style outfit known as turban, and his wife Michelle Obama carrying a machine gun, dressed in camouflage and combat boots with a big afro.

The New Yorker says the July 21 cover entitled, “The Politics of Fear” is intended to be satirical.

In a statement from The New Yorker says, “in ‘The Politics of Fear,’ artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.”

Last night’s debate

email from Hillary Clinton to me

Dear Shaun,

Last night, Senator Obama and I had the chance to express some substantive differences on issues that affect people’s lives every day: the war in Iraq, the mortgage crisis, Social Security, and rising gas prices.

I know when I stand up at a debate like last night, I’m speaking not just for myself, but for everyone who has supported me in this race. I know I wouldn’t be here without you, and I can’t tell you how proud I am to stand with you.

This race should be decided on the merits of our ideas — not the size our campaign coffers. This race is still tight because people are responding to our shared values and vision. It’s so close that a contribution you make today could be the difference between winning and losing — even as little as $5 can have a critical impact.

If you missed the debate last night, click here to watch my closing statement and contribute today to help me win.

Thank for all you do.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

The advice I give Hillary

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

email from Bill Clinton to me
Dear Shaun,

Give Hillary the resources to win
I’m going to give you the same advice I give to Hillary: block out the distractions — the skeptics, the media coverage, the beltway chatter — and keep your eyes on the prize.

With the news media constantly poring over the minutiae of the campaign, I make sure Hillary never forgets to stay focused on what matters: telling every last American about her vision, her experience, and her commitment to bringing real change to people’s lives.

Let the press worry about the shifting polls and the daily back-and-forth. As long as Hillary stands up for the values we share — and as long as you stand up for her — she’s going to win this race.

It’s a tight race, whether you’re counting delegates or total votes, the kind where one big victory can shift the momentum. We’ve got a race like that coming up in Pennsylvania in just six days, and your immediate action will make a difference. I know that this might be the first donation for a lot of you, but even $5 can help Hillary win.

Contribute $5 now to help Hillary win big in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

We know Senator Obama’s strategy: spend, spend, and spend some more.

His campaign is hoping their spending is enough to win the primary and bring this race to a close. But they weren’t counting on the incredible connection Hillary has made with Pennsylvanians or the remarkable support you have shown her.

Tonight, Hillary will share the stage with Senator Obama in a debate, and Pennsylvania voters will consider their final decisions over the next six critical days.

If you contribute to Hillary’s campaign today, you can be assured of two things: it will go right back out the door to help her win, and it will make a difference in this close race.

Contribute $5 today for our Pennsylvania victory.

Don’t forget: stay focused on what’s important, and we’ll celebrate victory together.

Thank you,

Bill Clinton

Winning and losing

eMail From Hillary Clinton to me

Dear Shaun,

No candidate can guarantee victory. But throughout this campaign, I have made one promise to you, and I intend to keep it.

As long as I have your support, as long as you are fighting by my side, I will work as hard as I can to win.

Here is the challenge we face. With the Obama campaign outspending us 3-to-1, the polls are tightening in Pennsylvania, and we have exactly one week left to get our message out.

Before the Super Tuesday primaries on February 5, I told you that if you reached out to support my campaign, you would see the results — and you did. I told you we could win Texas and Ohio on March 4 with your help — and you put us over the top.

I need your help right now to win in Pennsylvania, and this race is close enough that the decision you make could be the difference between winning and losing.

Contribute now to help us close the spending gap and win in Pennsylvania.

I’ve talked, listened, and learned my way across the Keystone state these past few weeks, and I’ve met people who are optimistic, hard-working, and ready for a president who stands up and fights for them every single day.

I’ve felt such a deep connection to the people I’ve met in Pennsylvania, and I’m proud of the campaign we’re running here. But we are still being outspent 3-to-1, and I need your help to close that gap if we want to win.

In the next seven days, thousands of people will be making their final decision in the Democratic primary, and we must make sure they hear our message. We can’t let our voices be drowned out by the Obama campaign’s limitless spending.

Contribute today to help me make sure our message is heard across Pennsylvania in the next seven days.

Thank you so much for doing everything you can do to keep our campaign driving forward.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton
